Srinagar, Oct 04: Srinagar Traffic Police has tightened its grip on errant Smart City bus operators, issuing around 500 challans in the last three months for repeated violations. This was disclosed by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Traffic City Srinagar, Aijaz Ahmad Bhat (IPS), while interacting with reporters on Saturday. The SSP was speaking during a health camp organised jointly by the Traffic Police Srinagar and Paras Hospital, where bus drivers underwent comprehensive medical check-ups. Given that a large number of drivers fall in the older age group, eye specialists conducted detailed vision tests to ensure fitness for road safety. “Drivers’ eyesight is crucial for the safety of passengers and pedestrians. Their health was evaluated and consultations were offered free of charge,” he said. Bhat said that during the screening, several drivers were also detected with diabetes, underlining the necessity of periodic health assessments for those behind the wheel of public transport. “These camps will be expanded to other areas as well to reduce accident risks and make travel safer for commuters,” he added. On traffic enforcement, the SSP said that violations by Smart City bus drivers are being closely monitored. “Whenever misconduct or breach of traffic rules is noticed, our teams act promptly. We are committed to ensuring discipline on the roads,” he added. Apart from addressing road safety, the SSP issued an advisory on the growing menace of cyber fraud. He cautioned people against responding to dubious online links and stressed that citizens should rely only on official applications such as the government’s Parivan app. “Our approach is clear—strict enforcement of traffic laws coupled with measures to improve drivers’ health. Both aspects are vital for public safety, which remains our topmost priority,” Bhat said.
