Srinagar, May 28: Three live mortar shells were recovered from the Narwal area of Jammu city on Wednesday afternoon, prompting a swift response from security agencies. The shells were successfully defused by the Bomb Disposal Squad of Jammu and Kashmir Police, officials said.
According to police officials at the Narwal post, the unexploded shells were spotted lying in bushes near the Regional Transport Office (RTO) on the outskirts of the city. Upon receiving the information, a specialized bomb disposal team was rushed to the location to neutralize the threat.
“The shells were found ahead of the RTO office in Narwal. Our team acted immediately, and all three were safely defused without any damage or casualties,” a police official said.
The recovery comes in the backdrop of heightened tensions in the region, following an armed exchange between India and Pakistan earlier this month. On April 22 , a deadly terror attack in Baisaran meadows of Pahalgam claimed the lives of 25 tourists and a local pony rider.
In response, Indian forces launched a series of precision strikes under ‘Operation Sindoor’ on the night of May 6–7, targeting terror infrastructure inside Pakistani territory. The military action escalated into a brief but intense armed confrontation between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
Since then, reports of drone activity have increased over parts of Jammu, including areas around the city. While speculation exists regarding the origin of the recovered shells, police officials have yet to confirm whether they were dropped by Pakistani drones or left behind by other means.
“Investigations are ongoing. Security forces remain on high alert across Jammu in light of the recent developments,” the police official said.
