Kulgam, Oct 08: Two residential houses were gutted in a massive fire incident in the Mirhama area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district last night.
An official said that the residential houses belonging to Abdul Salam Sheikh and Ali Mohd Sheikh of Sheikh Mohalla Mirhama were gutted partially in a fire incident.
Abid Yousuf, a local told Rising Kashmir that locals tried their best to extinguish the fire but it was beyond their magnitude to douse the fire.
“A massive fire engulfed the residential house during the intervening night of Oct 07 and Oct 08 and reduced them into ashes. Locals couldn’t extinguish the fire and later fire and emergency services doused it,” he said.
Ghulam Mohammad, the Sarpanch of the village said, short-circuit is believed to be the reason behind the fire incident.
“Both the houses were two-story buildings for residential purposes. Aside from the damage to two houses, the roof of another neighbouring house caught the fire during the incident,” he said.
Locals, army personnel, and fire and emergency services put up efforts to minimize the damage to residential houses from spreading further, he said.
Abdul Hamid, Station Officer, Fire and Emergency Services Kulgam said, they received the information at around 22:57 hours (10:57 PM) and the teams immediately rushed to the area and doused the fire.
“The fire had engulfed the two houses and the upper half was partially damaged in the incident. After efforts, we managed to extinguish the fire and save the property from further damage,” he said.
The officer said that according to preliminary assessment the property worth 10 lakhs got damaged in the blaze.
“Assets worth 30 lakhs were saved from the massive fire in residential houses,’ the official further said.
