Shopian, Feb 06: Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shopian on Tuesday said that 126 drug peddlers have been arrested since 2023 while t 13 drug peddlers have been booked under Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (PIT NDPS) in the district.
Addressing a press briefing, SSP Shopian, Tanushree said that police are taking strict action against the drug menace in Shopian. “From 2023 until the present date, Shopian Police have had successful operations. “Since 2023, we have registered 98 cases related to drugs in the district”, Tanushree said.
She said 126 individuals have been arrested, among them 13 have been booked under the PIT NDPS Act. Additionally, around 433 kilograms of Poppy straw has been seized during this period.
“215 kilograms of Charas, 1.65 kilograms of heroin, and 50 lakh cash have also been seized during this time. From the possession of the arrested persons, 18 vehicles were also seized. Besides, 10 bank accounts were frozen”, SSP said, adding that the property attachment process has been initiated against two individuals.
She said that in the coming times, police will make further strong efforts against drug peddlers, and action will be taken against them. Intelligence-based operations are being executed against drug peddlers who have acquired properties through drug sales, she said.
The local fruit Mandi, which is a central place for incoming and outgoing vehicles, has also become a hub for some peddlers, she said. “We are working on it and also request the people working there to inform the police if they notice any drug deals”, she added.
SSP said the message for drug peddlers is clear: that they are being tracked based on intelligence. She said, “Civil society has provided help and information, and we further encourage them to provide any clues regarding drug peddling or abuse wherever they encounter it.”
