Srinagar, May 28: The Srinagar Smart City is making remarkable strides towards creating a sustainable and eco-friendly public transportation system. In a recent development, Commissioner SMC and CEO Smart City, Athar Aamir Khan, along with senior officials from various departments, embarked on a high-level visit to the upcoming Electric Bus Depot at Pantha Chowk.
According to SMC officials, the purpose of this visit was to oversee the preparations for the establishment of the electric bus depot, which is set to revolutionize public transport in Srinagar. With a commitment to environmental conservation, Srinagar Smart City aims to deploy 100 electric buses, in collaboration with Tata Motors by the end of this year.
“To ensure transparency and adherence to protocol, Tata Motors was selected through a rigorous bidding process supervised by the Srinagar Smart City Limited (SSCL). The routes for these buses have been meticulously designed based on Integrated Public Transportation studies, ensuring optimal coverage and connectivity throughout the city,” smart city officials said.
To support the electric bus services, charging stations are being strategically set up across various areas of Srinagar. These stations will enable efficient and convenient charging for the buses, allowing them to serve the public seamlessly. Moreover, a substantial plot of 65 kanals has been earmarked for the Pantha Chowk Bus Depot, which will house not only the charging stations but also an administration block, service stations, and bus terminals.
Athar Aamir Khan has directed all concerned authorities to expedite the work at the site. This directive ensures that the development proceeds smoothly and within the designated timeframe.
“The introduction of electric buses in Srinagar is a significant step towards reducing air pollution and creating a cleaner, greener city. It aligns perfectly with the vision of Srinagar Smart City to promote sustainable urban development and improve the quality of life for its residents,” officials added.
The upcoming electric bus depot and charging stations exemplify the city’s progressive mindset and determination to embrace innovative technologies. This positive initiative not only provides eco-friendly transportation options but also paves the way for other cities to follow suit in building a sustainable future.
Srinagar Smart City’s commitment to transforming public transportation has garnered praise and enthusiasm from the residents. With the impending arrival of the electric buses, Srinagar is poised to become a model city for sustainable urban development, setting an inspiring example for others to emulate.
