Srinagar, Sep 23: At least 10 youths were arrested on charges of vitiating the peaceful atmosphere outside the historic Jamia Masjid here during the congregational prayers on Friday, police said on Saturday.
Police wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter), “10 Hooligans were arrested for trying to vitiate the peaceful atmosphere outside Jamia Masjid Nowhatta after Friday prayers. They shall be booked under relevant sections of law. Public is requested not to indulge in such acts failing which law will take its own course.”
A police spokesperson urged the public not to indulge in such acts. He said some youths raised slogans when Mirwaiz Umar Farooq came out of the grand mosque after offering the congregational prayers.
All the accused were identified through digital and human intelligence and after that, raids were conducted during the night, he said, adding, “We are investigating this matter and more arrests are expected in the case, they were raising in anti-national, anti-establishment slogans.”
On Friday, after a gap of more than four years, Hurriyat Conference (M) Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq led the congregational Friday prayers at the historic Jamia Masjid which were attended by hundreds of devotees from across the valley.
