Jammu, May 04: One soldier was killed while four were injured when terrorists ambushed a convoy of the Indian Air Force (IAF) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district on Saturday, officials said. The attack occurred late Saturday evening near Shahsitar area in Poonch sector.
In the ensuing gunfight with the terrorists, the IAF warriors fought back by returning the fire, the IAF spokesman said.
He said, “One soldier was martyred in the terrorist attack, while five IAF personnel received bullet injuries”, adding, “the injured were evacuated to the nearest military hospital for immediate medical treatment”.
“Immediately, after the terrorist attack, the security forces called in reinforcements and the entire area was cordoned,” Jammu based Defence PRO, Suneel Bartwal told Rising Kashmir.
Intense search has been going on in the area, he said. The cordon and search operations are underway in the area by local military units, the Army sources said.
“An Indian Air Force (IAF) vehicle convoy was attacked by terrorists in Poonch District of J&K near Shahsitar,” the IAF stated in its post, adding, “The cordon and search operations are underway”.
The convoy has been secured and further investigation is under progress, the IAF said. The terrorist attack on IAF convoy has come ahead of Lok Sabha polls which will be held in Rajouri-Anantnag-Poonch seat in coming days.
