Endometriosis is a painful disorder that is characterized by tissue that behaves like the lining of the uterus but that grows outside the uterus. This tissue can be found in various places, such as the ovaries, Fallopian tubes, and pelvic lining, and even in or around the bladder and bowel.

We need a high degree of clinical suspicion to diagnose endometriosis early. It will help reduce the suffering of women and girls who present with distressing period pain or pelvic pain.

Early identification and treatment of endometriosis in young women can arrest the disease, prevent infertility, improve their quality of life and contribute to the emotional well being of girls, women, and families.

But diagnosis is not just a matter for clinicians, it is important young women and their families educate themselves about normal period pain and can advocate for themselves if they believe their symptoms are distressing.

Correct diagnosis of endometriosis requires intervention at various levels. It may also require laparoscopy sometimes, where a biopsy is performed and the affected tissue is examined under a microscope.

While some pain with periods is normal, if periods are distressing or associated pain is preventing daily activities, then it should be investigated.
