Studies from the UK endorsed by the Royal College of Obstetricians suggest that almost two-thirds of pregnant women with confirmed covid-19 infection have no symptoms at all and most pregnant women who do have symptoms only have mild cold or flu-like symptoms. However, a small number of pregnant women can become unwell with covid-19 and may be at increased risk of becoming severely unwell compared to non-pregnant women, particularly in the third trimester of pregnancy (28 weeks and above).Â
It is therefore very important that all pregnant ladies take adequate precautions to protect themselves against covid-19. Simple measures like hand hygiene (washing your hands regularly with soap and water and using a hand-rub sanitizer when soap and water is not available), wearing masks, maintaining social distance, avoiding crowds or places with poor ventilation will go a long way to help keep pregnant ladies safe from covid-19.Â
If there is fever, cough or difficulty breathing, seek medical care early. Call before going to a health facility and follow directions issued by the administration.
