Ganderbal, Mar 03: The Power Canal of Upper Sindh Hydro Power Project (USHP 11), which runs from Rayil to Kangan in Central Kashmir's Ganderbal district, has become a death trap for locals due to the lack of fencing for many decades.
The Power Development Corporation (PDC) constructed the canal in the 1960s, but the lack of fencing has made it hazardous for people and their livestock. Despite several deaths and losses in the past, the concerned department has not installed fencing where needed.
The canal passes through Rayil, Gund, Fraw, Haknar, Sumbal, Kangan, and nearby areas. While some sections of the canal have fencing, most of it remains unfenced.
In 2013, the canal broke near KulloMohallah, causing massive damage to residential houses and destroying some areas of land.
The locals have urged the district administration to address the issue and install fencing as soon as possible to prevent any further loss of life. They emphasized that the canal has not benefited the local area except for the loss of precious lives.
The people of the area appeal to the concerned authorities to take immediate action to safeguard the lives of the locals and their livestock.
