Two-day Inter-College Athletic championship concludes at IUST

Srinagar, July 05: The two-day inter-college athletic championship concluded at the Islamic University of Science and Technology on Tuesday.

 As per a varsity spokesperson, hundreds of athletes from different colleges of the valley participated in the championship that was organized by the Directorate of Sports and Physical Education of the university on July 4-5.

An equal number of male and female athletes participated in different games of the championship with enthusiasm.

 The main games of the championship included short/middle and relay races, Long Jump, Shot Put, and Javeline Throw. Government Degree College Pulwama took the lead with 5 gold medals, two silver medals, and two bronze medals. GDC Tral stood second with 5 gold, 2 silver, and 6 Bronze medals. IUST stood third with 5 gold, 3 silver, and 1 bronze medal, the spokesman said.

On Monday, the event was inaugurated by Prof. Shakil Ahmed Romshoo (Vice-Chancellor, IUST) who was the Chief Guest at the event. Prof. Naseer Iqbal (Registrar, IUST) was the Guest of Honour on the occasion.

On this inaugural session, Prof. Shakil A Romshoo had said “With the world-class sports infrastructure available, IUST endeavours to organize such sports events in the future as well. The recent para-athlete meet held at the varsity was also first ever para-athlete meet in Kashmir. In near future, we plan to organize mega sports events with participation from other parts of the country. Such sports events also will help to develop a sense of leadership among the students”.

“The focus is on the development of sports and empowerment of youth through sports and physical activities. This two-day event make us witness the unmatchable sports spirit among the college boys and girls who very enthusiastically participated in different events of the championship”, said Prof. Naseer Iqbal had said.
