Srinagar, April 24: The CPI (M) leader and former minister Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami Sunday said that the party has been reiterating the removal of the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act since long.
The statement of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh that all three wings of defence forces are in favour of the removal of AFSPA from the North East and Jammu and Kashmir reflects that the government has finally realized that the law has resulted in human rights abuses, Tarigami said in a statement.
“The colonial era law, which has no place in modern society fosters a regime of impunity among the security forces,” he added.
He said that the CPI (M) has always steadfastly called for the repeal of the law from both Jammu and Kashmir and North East. The party has been raising its voice at different forums against the controversial law.
Although the government's realization to remove the law is late, it's better late than never, the CPI (M) leader said.
