Strong 6.8-magnitude quake jolts JK

Srinagar, Mar 21: An earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale jolted Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday. Disaster management officials said the temblor struck at 10.18 p.m., and the epicentre was in the Hindu Kush of Afghanistan region.
 
It triggered panic among the people who rushed outside their homes and called their loved ones to enquire about their wellbeing.
 
Deputy Director MeT, Mukhtar Ahmad said the high-intensity earthquake occurred 22:10:27IST. The earthquake was at the latitude 36.09 degrees north and longitude 71.35 degrees east, adding that epicenter was Hindu Kush Region of Afghanistan.
 
There was no immediate report of any damage in the earthquake which caused panic among the people who rushed out of their houses, he said.
 
Pertinently the Kashmir Valley is located in an  5th seismic zon earthquake prone region.
