Srinagar records season’s coldest night

Srinagar, Nov 12: As the cold wave continues to grip the Kashmir Valley, temperatures plummeted sharply across the region on Wednesday night. Srinagar recorded the season’s first and coldest sub-zero night. The minimum temperature at most places in the Valley dropped below the freezing point, marking the onset of early winter chills. According to the Meteorological Department (IMD), Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of –0.6°C, while several other stations reported even colder conditions. Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded the lowest temperature in the Valley at –3.8°C, followed by Budgam at –4.2°C and Shopian at –4.1°C. In north Kashmir, Kupwara registered –2.0°C, Bandipora –2.6°C, and Baramulla –3.2°C. The ski resort of Gulmarg recorded –1.0°C, while the famous Sonamarg resort in central Kashmir reported –2.9°C. Qazigund in south Kashmir recorded –1.5°C, Kokernag 0.8°C, and Pulwama –1.4°C. Awantipora recorded –2.2°C and Ganderbal –1.7°C. Pampore, known for its saffron fields, reported –3.4°C. In the Jammu region, temperatures also remained below normal at many places. Banihal recorded –0.5°C, Bhaderwah 1.2°C, Batote 4.5°C, and Udhampur 5.0°C. Jammu city recorded 10.0°C, Katra 9.0°C, Kathua 10.2°C, and Rajouri 3.4°C. The lowest in the region was reported at Banihal, with the mercury dropping just below freezing. Director MeT, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, told Rising Kashmir that the minimum night temperature has remained 1–3°C below normal in many parts of the Kashmir Division and 2–5°C below normal in the Jammu Division. “The lowest minimum temperature was recorded at Pahalgam (–3.8°C) in Kashmir and at Banihal (–0.5°C) in Jammu,” he said. Regarding the forecast, Dr. Ahmad said that generally dry weather is expected to continue between November 12 and 15. On November 16, the weather may turn cloudy towards the afternoon with a brief spell of very light snow over isolated higher reaches. “The period between November 17 and 19 is likely to remain dry, while November 20 may see cloudy conditions again. Between November 21 and 23, the weather will be partly to generally cloudy,” he added. The department has also issued an advisory for farmers, urging them to continue their regular agricultural operations. A slight rise in both maximum and minimum temperatures by 1–2°C is expected between November 17 and 20, followed by another dip thereafter.
