In the newly formed union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, football is among the most popular games. It is not only played by a large number of youngsters but have a huge base of fans cutting across age and gender barriers. It is played in every corner of Jammu and Kashmir. Besides there are national and international events of football where players from this region participate and win laurels. There are a number of affiliated clubs which represent different departments and institutes in this game. Many government and semi government departments in here have their own football teams, like we have the football team which represents SRTC (State Road Transport Corporation), we a team which represents the Jammu and Kashmir Police. Similarly, the leading financial institution of Jammu and Kashmir, the Jammu and Kashmir Bank also has a formidable football team. In fact in the promotion of football J&K Bank has set a good example, worth emulating. Not only are the players of the Bank’s team locally popular but have secured their place at the national level also. MehrajWadoo and Ishfaq Mir are the local lads who are now national heroes. But why only Bank’s team is producing good players and not the others needs to be looked into. The reasons can be numerous; however, what is most striking is that all the teams except JK Bank’s team failed to get the standard training and professional assistance. Bank has tried to make available better training facilities to its payers. But if J&K Bank is able to provide the required facilities why are others lagging behind? One can’t rule out the factor of financial constraint but there are a number of ways this can be overcome. If an association is formed to put forward the grievances of players in front of new government a lot can be done. Secondly, if these clubs approach various private entrepreneurs for financial assistance help can trickle in. But it needs not just will but a method on part of these professional clubs and other sports organizations to pursue things.
