‘Speed up fruit harvesting, storage’

Srinagar, 19 Oct: After the weather department in Jammu and Kashmir forecasted possibility of heavy rains and snowfall in Kashmir division in between October 23rd to October 25th, the Department of Horticulture on Tuesday issued an advisory, advising the fruit growers to speed up the harvesting of fruits and its proper storage.
In an advisory issued by the Department of Horticulture, the farmers have been advised to speed up the harvesting of the fruits.
The farmers have also been urged to clean drainage channels so that stagnation of water does not take place in orchards. Besides, the farmers have also been asked to ensure proper support to the trees which were earlier damaged or uprooted due to last year's snowfall.
The advisory has further asked the farmers to remain vigilant and periodically shake the trees in their orchards so that snow does not accumulate on the tree limbs.
“In case of snowfall, shake trees so that snow does not accumulate on the limbs”, reads the advisory.
According to the advisory issued, farmers may also start pruning their orchards, in view of the harsh weather advisory.
“However, there is no need for any panic and for further assistance farmers can contact the nearest Horticulture Office or office of Chief Horticulture Officer of the District”, states the advisory.
The advisory from the Horticulture Department has come after the weather department in Jammu and Kashmir forecasted that a there would be a fresh spell of widespread moderate rain and snow most likely during 23rd forenoon to 25th.
According to an official communiqué issued by the weather department, “Heavy rain, snow is likely at many places of J&K mainly on October 23rd”.
The Weather Department has also predicted the expected impact to damage of orchards, temporary disruption of major highways on hilly areas due to accumulation of snow and low temp.
