Srinagar, Aug 11: Army on Thursday said that slain terrorists killed in Budgam operation were planning a major attack in the run-up to Independence Day.
Addressing a press conference at 5 sector RR headquarters in central Kashmir Budgam area, Brigadier VJS Birdi Commander 5 Sector RR said slain terrorists killed in Watrahel Budgam were planning for major attack ahead of Independence Day in Kashmir.
“A major operation was carried out on Aug 10 in which a module of LeT was neutralized. This module was led by Lateef Rather, who was a member of LeT for past two decades and was involved in major activities including the killing of police and security forces,” he said.
Brigadier Birdi said, “On August 10, based on input from J&K police, Rashtriya rifles and police launched an operation against them. They were neutralized with zero casualties,” he said.
The Brigadier said the security forces established an initial cordon around the suspected cluster of houses in the village, which was subsequently strengthened by covering all possible escape routes.
"After confirming the presence of two to three terrorists hiding in one of the houses, the Security Forces started evacuating the civilians in the vicinity, to a safe location. As the civilians were being moved, the terrorists opened indiscriminate fire and hurled grenades. To mitigate casualties to the civilians, the search party stopped engaging the terrorists and prioritised the evacuation of civilians out of the danger zone, while keeping terrorists under observation," he said.
The Army officer said 2 AK series Rifles, 2 pistols, and other warlike weapons were recovered from the encounter site where 3 terrorists of terror outfit LeT(TRF) including terrorist Lateef Rather, were involved in several civilian killings including Rahul Bhat and Amreen Bhat were intercepted and killed.
The operation lasted for over 18 hours and subsequently resulted in the neutralization of three hardcore terrorists.
“Our troops commenced a search of the area and recovered two AK series rifles, two pistols, and other warlike stores from the encounter site,” he said.
The three neutralized terrorists belonged to LeT and they have been identified by JKP as Lateef Ah Rather, resident of Badipora, Chadoora, Budgam, Saqib Ah Khan, resident of Khunmoh, Srinagar, and Muzzafar Ah Chopan, resident of Khunmoh, Srinagar.
As per JKP, Lateef Ah Rather was involved in various killings of Rahul Bhatt and Amrina Bhatt earlier this year.
“The individual was also involved in attacks on security forces including the brutal killing of Police SHO Shabir Ahmed at Chadoora market in 2013,” he said.
The Army officer said the slain was also the mastermind behind a number of recent terrorist recruitment drives.
Another officer said a total of five terrorists were eliminated and 30 Kgs of IED were recovered during the 24 hours in two separate operations.
“136 terrorists including 36 foreigners have been eliminated in the current year,” the officer said.
