SKUAST-K conducts training programme for socio-economic upliftment of tribal community

Srinagar, Apr 12: The Mountain Research Centre for Field Crops (MRCFC)-Khudwani, a part of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST-K), conducted a training programme on April 12, 2023, aimed at the socio-economic upliftment of the tribal community in Kulgam and Anantnag districts. The programme was conducted under the Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP Rice) sponsored by ICAR-IIRR, Hyderabad.
During the programme, quality seeds of university-developed Shalimar Rice 5, K332 and farm tool kits were distributed among 50 tribal farmers. The event was attended by Associate Director Research Prof. N.R. Sofi, Scientists of MRCFC-Khudwani and officers from the Agricultural Production Department.
Professor Najeeb-Ul-Rehman Sofi stressed the importance of quality seeds and other inputs in profitable crop production. He urged the farmers to adopt modern scientific approaches to ensure sustainability and profitability in the farming sector.
Dr. Tasneem Mubarak, Professor-cum-Chief Scientist, gave an overview of the TSP Rice Programme and discussed the importance of soil health sustainability. Dr F. A Mohiddin informed the farmers about common diseases & pests of important crops grown in tribal areas of Kashmir valley & their eco-friendly control measures.
In a similar event, a Vermicompost distribution-cum-Training Programme on good practices for wheat production was also conducted under TSP-Wheat sponsored by ICAR-IIWBR, Karnal. Around 35 farmers belonging to ST category from the villages of districts Anantnag and Kulgam participated in the programme.
Dr. Shabir Hussain Wani, PI- Programme, deliberated on the importance of timely sowing and use of improved varieties in wheat for increasing food and nutritional security.
