The principal Srinagar Women's Polytechnic College told Rising Kashmir that all the polytechnic colleges have submitted the proposal for the new courses, and these courses have been approved by the SDD and will be available in colleges from the next academic session. She said that each polytechnic would have one new course.

She said in Women’s Polytechnic College, Srinagar, “we have proposed the travel, tourism, and hospitality courses and the same has been approved, and now it needs final approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE)”.

Another principal of a polytechnic college told Rising Kashmir that some district colleges have proposed civil engineering branches in their institutions.

All the processes for these courses have been completed and in the next academic session, these courses will be available as they need final approval from the AICTE.

The introduction of new courses shall increase the employability of students and also align the courses with the National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) and global standards to suit the current developments and demands.

The institutions in Anantnag and Baramulla have proposed Medical Lab Technology (MTL) courses, while others have proposed some other courses in the district polytechnic colleges.

These colleges in Kashmir had limited branches earlier, and students were forced to move to other districts or outside UT, as a limited number of seats remained available at these institutions.

J&K has recently taken the path of brisk development that has opened new vistas of employment opportunities for the youth.

Principal Secretary Dr Samoon said be it railways, tunnels, power projects, or other infrastructure, there is a great scope for the youth to get skilled  and be employable.

He also stressed on the principals of polytechnic colleges to make their institutions centers of excellence in skill-seeking where entrepreneurs and highly skilled manpower are produced.

The skill development department has also asked the principals to introduce some short courses of 3-6 months at their institutions.
