Scholarships that empower academic, career goals of J&K students

Across the educational institutions of Jammu and Kashmir, there are several scholarships available for the students in colleges and universities including for those who do not have the resources to go for higher studies. The list of J&K scholarships is not just limited to these scholarships only. There are several other scholarships as well for the students. This article details about scholarships in J&K. Later, we will also write about national and international scholarships in near future.

Central University of Kashmir (CUK) Scholarships and Funding

Merit Scholarships: To promote competitiveness among the students, the University provides scholarships to the students registered for various programs of study under the scheme" Merit Scholarships"'. Under this scheme, two meritorious students, determined on the basis of their End Semester result from each program, are provided a fellowship Rs 1,000 per month for every semester.

University of Kashmir: University of Kashmir provides several scholarships under different categories such as:

Merit scholarships: Students selected for admission to various courses/programs in the university are eligible to receive two merit scholarships which are paid to top two merit holders. Merit scholarship in favour of previous year paid students is granted on the basis of merit in the entrance test to the course and in the final year it is awarded on the basis of merit in the M.A/ M.Sc./ M.Com./ MLIS Previous/ Ist& 2nd semester examination. the scholarship is granted from the date of admission to the course upto the last date of the examination, subject to a maximunm period of 12 calendar months.

Research scholarships: There are four scholarships in each Department/ Research Centre awarded for carrying out research leading to the award of Ph.D./M.phil degrees in addition to contingency grant payable annually for meeting miscellaneous expenses.

Students Aid: Kashmir University has also a scheme namely ‘Students Aid’, under this scheme a financial assistance is extended to candidates, especially meritorious students who come for low-income groups. The Kashmir University Alumni Association also provides financial assistance to students with a poor economic background with preference being given to students who are orphans.

Cluster University of Srinagar (CUS): Loan/ Scholarship Provisions: 

Cluster University offers scholarships based on merit. CU proposes a fixed number of scholarships to excellent students and deserving candidates. Students have to apply for the scholarship at the time of admission in order to be eligible to avail the scholarship offer.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions: The affiliated college of CUS has good relations with sports authorities and also with the government. Hence there are many kinds of scheme runs in the college. There are various kinds of scholarships for different kind of students. The college also reward their toppers and praise their efforts. Backward category student has the benefit of scholarship also. Even scholarship and loan facilities are available for students who are engaged in sports and other activities.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions: The colleges shares relations with state and central government. Hence, there are many kinds of scheme runs in the college. There are various kinds of scholarship for different kind of student. The college also reward their toppers and praise their efforts. Backward category student has the benefit of scholarship also. They also provide Job opportunities to their passed students.

IUST Awantipora:

Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) also provides Merit Cum Means Scholarship Scheme for Schedule Tribe (ST), General Category (GC). It also provides other category schemes including Other Backward Class (OBC), Economically Backward Class (EBC), Pahari Speaking People (PSP), Physically Challenged Students (PCS), Schedule Caste (SC) and Denotified Nomadic & Semi-nomadic tribes (DNT).

Amar Singh College Srinagar Scholarships:

The AS College has 2 welfare schemes for students.

1: Financial Aid: Financial Aid is given by Financial Aid Committee to:

·        Orphan students with no earnings & children from broken families with no economic support to continue their studies

·        Handicapped/physically challenged students or those suffering from chronic diseases and to student having handicapped father without sufficient income to maintain his family.

·        Students with monthly family income of Rs 2,000 per month or less.

·        Students with monthly family income ranging between Rs 2,000 and Rs 3,000 per month

2: Social Welfare Funds/Bad Pocket/Frontier: Social Welfare Funds includes fee concessions or other concessions to the deserving students.

Govt. College for Women Srinagar:

Scholarship and Financial Aid is given to the deserving students, who belong to the economically weaker sections of the society, orphans and physically challenged as per the guidelines of the Department of Higher Education.

Besides, the Department of Social Welfare also provides scholarship to the students belonging to economically disadvantaged families.

The scholarship/Financial Aid Committee scrutinizes the properly filled formats of students and proper interview is conducted to give benefits to the genuine and deserving students.

Also, Kashmir Japan Scholarship, in collaboration with University Women Japan, college has established a Scholarship under which meritorious students are given assistance in cash to excel in their field of interest.

Besides, the award sponsored by Prof. Leela, a former faculty member of the college comprises a cash prize of Rs 1,000 and a citation. It is given annually to the students whose performance is outstanding in economics.

Central University of Jammu:

Central University of Jammu also provides scholarships and funding. The university accepts various government scholarships which are as follows: Emeritus Fellowship, Research Award, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan Postdoctoral Fellowship of Humanities and Social Sciences (including language), Post-Doctoral fellowship for Women, Post-Doctoral Fellowship for SC/ST candidates, Swami Viveknanda Single girl child scholarship for research in Social Science, Rajiv Gandhi National fellowship for SC/ST candidates, Rajiv Gandhi fellowship for person with disability, Maulana Azad National fellowship for minorities students, National fellowship for OBC candidates, Indira Gandhi PG scholarship for single child, PG scholarship for University rank holder, Post-Graduation scholarship for Professional courses for SC/ST candidates, Ishan Uday, Special scholarship scheme North-Eastern region.

University of Jammu:

The University of Jammu, accredited as 'A+' Grade University by the National Assessment & Accreditation Council of India also provides scholarships to the students. The University stands for spiritual and material elements in life, thirst for knowledge and virtue under the backdrop of holy peaks of Trikuta Hills. The scholarships provided by the varsity include  Kunwar Viyogi Merit Scholarship, Scholarship Scheme (Trust Fund), OC & MIL Scholarships, Post-Graduate Scholarship (Master's Degree Course), Merit and Merit-Cum-Means Scholarships in Diploma Courses, Scholarships in the LL.B. Course, Research Scholarships, Regulation for Grant/Utilization of Contigency Grant To be Given to the Whole- Time Pursuing Research leading to PH.D. who are not in Receipt of Any Scholarship/Fellowship, Regulation for Utilization of Contigency Grant Admissible to the Scholars Working Under the Scheme Of University Research Scholarship besides it also provides research fellowships.

SPMR College of Commerce Jammu:

Sri Pratap Memorial Rajput College of Commerce Jammu, a prestigious name in the discipline of commerce also provides some scholarships to the students that include National Loan scholarships, National Scholarships, Merit scholarships and Scholarship for SC, ST, OBC, Low Income groups, RBA, Frontier and Handicapped students.

Other scholarships:

Prime Minister Special Scholarship Scheme (PMSSS) Jammu & Kashmir:

The All India Council for Technical Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India offers PM Special Scholarship Scheme for class 12 passed students of Jammu and Kashmir. This AICTE JK scholarship offers variable awards to students who wish to pursue studies outside J&K. Started in the year 2011, this scholarship offers financial assistance to 5000 students every year.

Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme for Minorities:

Another significant initiative by the Government of India for the minority students is the Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme for Minorities. The scholarship provides financial assistance to students belonging to the Minority community, who are studying in class 11 to post-graduation level thereby covering their academic and other related expenses. It is a national level scholarship and every year, thousands of students from each state get benefitted through this scholarship.

Pre-Matric Scholarship Scheme for Minorities:

Every year, the Government of India also announces Pre-matric scholarship opportunities for class 1 to class 10 students of minority communities. This scholarship covers admission fee, tuition fee and maintenance allowance. The key objective of the scholarship is to provide financial support to the students across India. This scholarship also helps to reduce the rate of drop out of schools, every year.

Post Matric Scholarship for SC/OBC/EBC/PC/DNT Students, J&K:

The student with a permanent residence certificate of J&K and falls in the category of SC/OBC/EBC/PC/DNT are eligible for this. Those who are pursuing in the post-matriculation level within or outside Jammu and Kashmir at a government or government recognized institution. Family Annual Income should not be more than the asked by the department as per the category. OBC, EBC & PC – 1 Lakh and SC & DNT – 2.5 Lakh.

KEI High school Scholarship Program (HSSP):

The student with a permanent residence of J&K and studying in class 9 are only eligible. Students must have more than 75 percent marks in the 8th DIET State Exam. The Family Annual Income should be less than Rs 3 lakh.

KEI Post Graduate Scholarship Program (PGSP):

Students from the Kashmir who are pursuing MA/MSc/MCom/MTech courses can apply for this scholarship. Students pursuing integrated courses like BBA-MBA, LLB-LLM or BCA-MCA are also eligible. The Family Annual Income should be less than 3 lakh.

Combined Counselling Board (CCB) Scholarship, J&K:

Students must have permanent residence in Jammu and Kashmir. Students pursuing diploma level, degree level, or postgraduate level courses with any college and University are eligible. Students must have scored more than 40 percent marks in the previous exam.

CBSE Merit Scholarship for Single Girl Child:

To encourage and acknowledge the education of meritorious girl students, the Central Board of Secondary Education offers CBSE Merit Scholarship. This scholarship is for single girl children who have passed class 10 and are studying in class 11 and 12. The scholarship promises an award of INR 500 per month for a total duration of 2 years.

All India Youth Scholarship Entrance Examination (AIYSEE):

All India Youth Scholarship Entrance Examination (AIYSEE) offers variable awards for the students who have passed/appearing class 12 examination and will appear in medical or engineering entrance examinations.
