Role of Universities

Kerala University is going to amend its statute to insist on a declaration from its students that they will not violate the Dowry Prohibition Act for issuing their degree certificates. Though the Kerala University syndicate is yet to spell out the action to be taken against the students in case of violation of the declaration, the universities operating in the UT of J&K can explore similar provisions to check the menace of dowry in the region. Incidentally, Calicut and Mahatma Gandhi universities had also decided to insist on undertakings from students and their parents/guardians that the degree or admission of students shall be withdrawn if they violate the provisions. The parents also need to give an undertaking that they will not demand any dowry from the parents of the bride or bridegroom. These varsities had also made those joining its service sign an undertaking that the violation of the Act will make them liable for disciplinary action. Since it is a sensitive issue and any such amendments in the statutes of the universities of J&K may draw criticism, we should seek proper legal opinion before going ahead. Such measures have become relevant since unfortunately even the educated youth are found involved in dowry-related cases and domestic violence against women.
