For a change, if anyone wants to try out vegetarian food, Pushpa Restaurant is a place to go. Apart from offering pure vegetarian food, they serve snacks and homemade ice-creams.
Situated at Sonwar area of Srinagar, the restaurant also has a patio space for customers to enjoy and relax during the evening time.
“What if your non-Kashmiri friend is vegetarian? Don’t feel embarrassed, we have got you covered. In Kashmir, one doesn’t find an option of veg dishes. Here you can try out a number of dishes.” said Smisha Arora, a 22-year-old managerof the restaurant.
Amritsari Kulcha, Chana Batora, Dahi ke sholay are some of the dishes liked by one and all. Mango lassi and kulhad chai are in everyone’s favourite list.
“Amritsari Kulcha is every Sunday food for Punjabis. Dahi ke shoole is a Delhi item. We use pure desi ghee and the best ingredients from the north in our food. Our matka kulfi and jalebi are also liked by people,” she said.
The restaurant has been catering in marriage and functions with live counters for chaat, golgappa and sweets. At some marriages, tandoor is also taken to make fresh hot bread.
Talking about a good footfall, she said, “People feel the best vegetarian food is available only outside Kashmir. Though most of the people are non-veg here, when you give them good veg food, they will love it.”
In the future, the restaurant will have salads and subways as well. To move beyond the idea of simplicity, Smisha wants to focus on health-conscious people too. “We need to have green too. For that food with more vegetables and salads are also coming up,” she said.
“People here eat vegetarian food for a change. I make sure that change really becomes a change and my customers visit us again. The time has changed. People come out during late hours. This is the reason we keep cooking and brewing till 12 a.m.,” said Smisha.
