From quite some time we have been witnessing the growth of public consciousness about the pernicious effects of polythene. Students and other non governmental groups are continuously holding rallies and seminars to raise the public awareness about the threat that the use of polythene poses to our environment. It looks that the chips are down and we are finally rising from the deep slumber. It is unfortunate that it took us so long to realize the threat that polythene poses to our land and water sources, but better late than never. Although government has imposed a ban on the production of polythene yet the law hasn’t been followed in its letter and spirit. Even after the raised level of awareness we seem to be reluctant to give up the use of polythene in our daily lives. Even after witnessing the devastation that it inflicted on our water bodies, we haven’t changed our approach radically. Even now the use of polythene is all pervasive: there is hardly any household that doesn’t use polythene bags to carry the provisions and other household items. From vegetables to high-end gadgets we carry everything in polythene bags. If we are serious about saving our land and the water bodies that God has gifted us with, we must stop using polythene. The real change will start occurring once we, at individual level, say no to the use of polythene. After all why don’t we realise that lakes like Dal and Nigeen are on the verge of extinction as a result of dumping of tonnes of polythene in them. When this much of damage is already done, alarm bells must ring continuously. The efforts of some groups to mobiles people in this regard must be appreciated. Also people and government departments should act in unison to fight this menace. If on the one hand there is a need to clear the water bodies and land surface from polythene, there is an urgent need to launch a strong drive against not only the use but also the production of polythene, because unless the production of the polythene is completely banned this menace will not end.
