Pangotra appointed referee for Tokyo Paralympics

Srinagar,April 20: Atul Pangotra, International player and coach has been  appointed as  a referee to officiate at European Qualifications tournament for upcoming Tokyo Paralympics 2020.


Atul is also World Taekwondo and Referee Committee India Taekwondo Member.

Atul received his selection letter from the governing body of Taekwondo in World that is World Taekwondo (WT) for European Qualifications 2021, which is scheduled to be held at Sofia, Bulgaria on May 9, 2021.


The said qualification is the final selection phase for all the Athletes and Officials who aspire to represent their respective Nations at Paralympic Games 2021.


Last year, Atul qualified among top 50 officials for 2020 Paralympics and also represented India in the first two phases of Tokyo 2021 Paralympics Referee seminars held internationally.


Atul Pangotra is working as Physical education Teacher in the department of Youth Services and Sports (YSS) and is currently deputed in the JKSC as Taekwondo Coach in Srinagar.


Senior Vice President, India Taekwondo (IT) S.M Bali, Senior Vice President J&K Taekwondo Association congratulated Atul Pangotra for his selection and made a request to the Government of J&K for allowing him and providing Financial Assistance for this Qualification.


Atul started his Sports Journey in 1988, participated in the first 'National Championship in 1991. He also represented J&K in Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Karate and bagged gold medals in each sport at National Level.


He clinched first Silver medal in the 1999 Taekwondo National held at Ajmer.


In 2001 secured a Bronze medal in Senior National Wushu Championship and again in 2002 clinched Silver Medal in Senior National Wushu Championship.


During Taekwondo Senior National in 2004 he got his hand injured in Kolkata.In 2005 he had to operate his hand twice.


But he continued and managed to secure his SeT at National Institute of Sports (NIS) for diploma 2006 as coach.


Because of his injury he switched to another event of Taekwondo which is Poomsae (Non-contact), and clinched first ever Gold medal in Taekwondo National in J&K history.


From 2008 till 2018, he remained Reining Defending Poomsae Champion of India.

He participated in 5 World Taekwondo Championships.



He participated twice in Asian Championships and secured rank 5.He is also 2 times  Commonwealth medalist, bagged World Taekwondo Hanmadang Silver medalist held at Nepal, England open Gold and Best male Athlete of  event 2016, Raw Championship Gold Scotland,  and is only player from J&K in Taekwondo to ever qualify for SAG games.

He is also a recipient of the State and Sher-i-kashmir Award.


As a Coach, he produced more than 100 International Athletes and received the best male coach award during Junior World' Championship.

He also served as a coach and assisted team India in Asian Games 2018 held at Jakarta Indonesia.


He remained active since his athletic career and participated in a number of Referee seminars and now he is one of the reputed Referee officials around the Globe.


He is an international Referee in both Kyourigi and Poomsae.


Currently Pangotra has been shortlisted to officiate in the European Qualifications for Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.


The event will take place in Sofia Bulgaria from May 7 2021. Atul is the only official from J&K to ever qualify for European Qualifications.
