High density lipoprotein is the good cholesterol because it carries cholesterol back to the liver where it is broken down and flushed out of the body.

INCREASE HDL TO LOWER RISK OF HEART DISEASE :

  1. Cut out saturated fats: by limiting the use of butter, ghee, organ meats, red meats and full fat dairy
  2. Trans fats reduce HDL and increase LDL, so go easy on hydrogenated oils, margarines and excessive bakery products like rusk, fan, biscuits etc.
  3. Stop smoking
