Srinagar, Sep 26: The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Srinagar has commenced its annual Craft Research Documentation, a flagship academic initiative running from September 17 to September 27. Fifth-semester students from all departments will immerse themselves in artisan communities across Jammu & Kashmir to document, study, and promote the region’s rich craft heritage.According to a statement issued here, this field-based project offers students hands-on experience with traditional crafts, aiming to bridge the gap between theoretical design education and the living practices of master artisans. By engaging directly with craftspeople, students gain invaluable insights that will inform their future work in the fashion and textile sectors, with a strong emphasis on sustainable and culturally rooted design. The research will encompass a wide variety of celebrated Kashmiri crafts, including Pashmina weaving, Kani shawl, Walnut wood carving, Papier-mâché, Copperware, Sozni and Tilla embroidery, Willow wicker, and Tweed, among others. Students will observe and learn craft processes at a foundational level, producing multi-format documentation as the final output. This will include a comprehensive printed report, a professional video documentary, and short-form digital content such as reels, intended for both archival preservation and global promotion. The initiative highlights NIFT Srinagar’s commitment to nurturing designers who are innovative while remaining deeply connected to India’s artisanal legacy.
