Kashmir is known as the valley of saints (Peer waar) and the town Newa of south Kashmir's Pulwama district isn't devoid of such holy Dargahs (the final resting places of saints). The town Newa is blessed with a holy shrine of Hazrat Syed Sultan Fakurudin (RA) - a sufi saint was in Kashmir for the cause of Islam before some 600 years, although the real history is not known, but the prospect of miracles from them and their initiatives are known through pious old people of town and historical scripts, including their relations with Shaykh Noor din Noorani (RA), Shaykh Hamza Mukhdoomi (RA), Shaykh Abu Hanifa (RA). Since centuries, the devotees come to the holy shrine for blessings incomparable to caste, creed, colour and religions.
The spiritual degnified saint was a grand scholar living noble life with his wife and his family including younger son "Sareef ud Din Shaheed (Sher Sahab) after emigrating from city Khatlon (a province of Tajikistan) accompanied by 1400 other companions (Awliya e kiram).
Soon his wife also adopted the lonely life in jungles, away from home in the cave near village Zadoora Newa to spread Islam by noble character in Brahmin's (the caste of Hindus) population of Kashmir. The saint and diciple (peer mureedi) process was running hand in hand in the family.
Syed Sultan Fakurudin (RA) was residing in mountain cave called Chakont, which was like home inside. The egocentric people chopped those mountains lead no signs of caves. It is said, the name of the village, Newa is on the name of a saint known as the ruler king (Shah e Newa) and he was the ruler in Newa during the captalism (Kotraj) and the ruler was the diciple of Syed Sultan Fakurudin (RA) and his dome can be seen in middle of graveyard.
The historians aren't clearly mentioning the family of Syed Sultan Fakurudin (RA), however it's mentioned he had many sons and brothers, who spread across Kashmir for the cause of Islam. The separate two graves are close to the shrine, and it's said the graves are of his two sons.
The brother of holy saint known as Syed Farid u din (RA) rested in Jamalata Srinagar in a grand builded shrine. The historians mention Bebi Habiba (Habba Khaton) as a descendant from pedigree of the holy saint.
The name Sultan (king) was popularly given by Zain ul Aabidin (Bad shah) to the renowned scholar and saint. It's mentioned Zain ul Aabidin (Bad Shah) appointed some scholars to teach Islam in different villages of Kashmir and Syed Sultan Fakurudin (RA) was one of them.
The school (madrasa) was later built by the Shaykh for the children in Kakapora Pulwama. His younger son Syed Shareef ud din (Sher sahab) was studying in the school accompanied with supernatural powers. The mystical saints were saddened by the daily activities of his younger son and later the scripts are silent in illuminating his martyrdom.
Zoon Begam (Ded Baab Sahab) was the diciple of the saint. She was famous for her revocations directly accepted by Allah. The younger son of saint Shareef ud din Shaheed (R.A) was eight years old, when he showed miracle (Karamat) in the school (madrasa).
During his childhood he came riding the tiger from forest with a big snake in the mouth of Tiger for pulling and another gigantic snake for beating tiger to make fast drive. After seeing the whole incident his father badly blessed him for martyrdom on the bank of stream as the event tormented him and same happened. He was then buried on the bank of stream. Today while visiting the graveyard you will see the small damaged dome.
There were his written books, dress (Juba Shareef), Footwear (Naalan Shareef), Holy Stick (Aasa Shareef) and other holy monuments of saint for pilgrimage (ziyarat) in the shrine. Every year people were assembling for the blessings during death anniversary (Urs e Fakurudin) for getting the blessings. What happened as those who tried to eat of dedications (Nazar o Niyaz) in the Shrine, they didn't preserved and protected the monuments well enough either due to decayed building or by the selfishness of stolers.
Another Shrine with the name Syed Sultan Fakurudin (RA) is in Naman Kakapora Pulwama. It is said holy saint used to sit that particular place and his disciples were sitting around the saint for blessings and when he left from the village "Naman" he kept his holy stick (Aasa shareef) in land, that particular holy stick planted is a big Chinaar tree today. The devotees had kept the historical monument as a constructed shrine and big mosque at that particular place.
There are other shrines and diciples of Syed Sultan Fakrudin (RA) around Syed Sultan Fakurudin's shrine Such as Mir Syed Bakir Naqshbandi (RA) and Mir Syed Fazil (RA), who didn't allowed people to construct a dome for a grave as per their silsila e Naqshbandiya. One more shrine is in the villiage "Shupdani" Newa namely Syed Najamudin (RA) , the people of belief used to take the cooked rice Tahar (Nov Karun) to the Dargah from their paddy caltivations to the holy shrine every year.
A comprehensive detailed research is needed to produce a publication in the shape of book, so that the new generation will get up to date information related to the exalted holy saint. While paying a visit to Newa, people will see the property worth millions of crores of the holy saint devoted to the people of belief. The Land under cultivation, School, Stadium, Hospital Land, JK Bank Building, Shopping malls, Jamia Masjid Hanfiya, Graveyards eccetra.
Las Bab was the another noble saint even during my times, who after his years of toil rested in the village called Sikh sarai Pulwama during his lifetime, recently the Saint departed from vanishing world. He was fast during life visiting Dargahs and was supplicating in Syed Sultan Fakurudin's Shrine.
The people present during his presence in the shrine were listening his cries as asking the Shrine to grant him place to stay there, but as it was a sign of spiritual rejection from Dargah then he was reprehending as 'ok then you stay, I will leave (matee ditee jaay yati, aasa dikna tali phat che yati) then LAS BAB was leaving the shrine.
The Shrine of sufi saint, located at Newa, Pulwama, Kashmir is managed by Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Wakf Board (JKMWB) from decades now, having income in millions, but management is waiting to appoint more employees rather to do something for the shrine. The concerned authorities aren't trying for betterment of shrine and it would have been better, if the funds achieved from these holy shrines will be spend on the projects of Islam.
