The mercury continued its downward spiral in Kashmir region owing to clear skies with Srinagar experiencing the coldest night of the season, Meteorological department officials said Thursday.
As per the officials at the Meteorological department, Srinagar witnessed the coldest night of the season on Thursday at minus 3.5 degree Celsius and recorded the day temperature of 9.5 degree Celsius on Thursday.
North Kashmir’s Kupwara district recorded a low of minus 4.9 degree Celsius last night while night temperature in Pahalgam in south Kashmir settled at a low of minus 2.8 degree Celsius last night, the official said.
The ski-resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded a minimum temperature of minus 6.2 degree Celsius while Jammu recorded a maximum of 21.5 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 8.6 degrees Celsius.
Drass recorded a maximum of minus 15.9 degrees Celsius last night and a minimum of minus 25.1 degrees Celsius on Thursday night while Leh recorded a maximum of minus 5.3 degree Celsius and a minimum of 13.5 degree Celsius.
Officials said weather would mainly remain dry and cold in next 3 to 4 days and due to that there would be more decrease in night temperatures across Kashmir region.
In view of the shooting of stones between Ramban and Ramsoo, the Srinagar- Jammu highway was again closed for traffic Thursday evening.
As per the traffic officials, only stranded vehicles would be allowed to ply on the highway on Friday.
“There are nearly 400 vehicles stranded on the highway. Fresh traffic will be allowed on the highway only after the stranded vehicles are cleared,” a traffic official said.
However, traffic on the Zojila-Leh road remained suspended for 15th consecutive day following fresh snowfall last week.
Traffic on the Mughal Road connecting the Pir Panjal region remained suspended following the season’s first snowfall on November 7.
