Kits would be distributed soon: SMC
As summer season approaches, Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) is yet to provide winter gears to its sanitation workers, compelling them to work in the freezing temperatures.
The group of sweepers on Monday told Rising Kashmir that they are facing problems in working during morning and evening shifts as SMC has failed to provide winter gears from past 3 years.
Mohammad Altaf, a sweeper at SMC said that it is very difficult to work without winter gears and officials have failed to provide them warm jackets, masks, and gloves, he said.
“We approached many times to the authorities but there was no response from their side. They have turned deaf ears to our demands,” he said.
‘Winter season has ended and we are yet to receive the sanitation gears, which is shame for the SMC,” he said.
Another sweeper, Irshad Ahmad from Hawal said before 4 years, SMC had provided them winter gears. In other parts of India, sanitation workers are fully equipped with clothes, jackets and other essentials but here sweepers are being neglected,” he said.
He said that every year sweepers are supposed to get winter gears but some blue eyed officials are denying the same to sanitation workers.
A senior official at SMC told Rising Kashmir that they have forwarded the proposal to the handloom and soon kits would be distributed among sanitation workers in the corporation.
‘The sanitation kits got delayed this year, but they would distribute winter gears within week,” the official said.
Earlier in January, Srinagar was ranked 45th rank in 2020-Swachh Survekshan across the India against the 457th rank in 2019.
