Press Council of India (PCI) has taken suo-motu cognizance regarding the police assault on photojournalists here on March 16.
In a notice to the state government and DGP, PCI observed: “It has been brought to the notice of the Council that Srinagar police have thrashed and threatened to kill the photojournalists in Srinagar during news coverage on March 16. Since the matter prima-facie concerns free functioning of the press and the statute mandates the PCI to preserve the freedom of the press, PCI chairman has viewed the incident with concern and taken suo-motu cognizance of the matter.”
“Now therefore, the government of Jammu and Kashmir is called upon to file a report on the facts of the case along with the reply statement within two weeks,” the PCI notice added.
