2 policemen killed, another injured in Nowgam attack

Two policemen were killed and another injured after militants fired at them at Nowgam byepass on the outskirts of Srinagar on Friday.
The attack took place a day ahead of August 15 when the security was on high alert.
A Police officer said the militants opened fire at the policemen who were on a routine security duty, injuring three of them.
The injured were evacuated to a hospital for treatment, however, two among them succumbed to injuries.
The deceased were identified as senior grade constable Fayaz Ahmad of Khuloora Devsar in Kulgam district and constable Ishfaq Ayoub of Maloora Srinagar.
The injured cop, identified as Muhammad Ashraf, was undergoing treatment.
The area was put under cordon and searched were launched by the forces to nab the attackers.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir, Vijay Kumar said that Jaish-e-Muhammad outfit was behind the attack.
“The militants have been identified and they will be killed soon,” Kumar said.
He said there was no security loophole as the lane (Gulshan Nagar), where from militants fired at the policemen, is narrow and there was civilian movement also which is why policemen exercised restraint.
"A retaliation could have resulted in civilian loss but, we will neutralise the militants," he said.
Whether Police had inputs about the possibility of militant strike ahead of August 15, the IGP Kashmir said there were inputs that militants could attack at any place but the policemen were on alert.
He said adequate security arrangements had been made for the August 15 function.
This was the second attack on the forces in Kashmir in the last three days.
On Wednesday, an Army man was injured when militants attacked a Quick Reaction Team (QRT) of Army at Hygam along the Srinagar- Baramulla highway.
