Missing SPO joined militant ranks, managed to escape from gunfight site: IGP

Police claimed to have apprehended a militant during a gunfight in Chadoora area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district on Friday.
A Police official said following the input of the presence of militants in the area, a joint operation was launched by the Special Operations Group (SOG) of Police and paramilitary CRPF during which a local militant was apprehended.
“The apprehended militant was identified as Jahangir Ahmad Bhat of Chadoora, who had recently joined militancy, however, another associate managed to flee from the site,” the official said.
Addresser a news conference in Srinagar, Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, Vijay Kumar said they had apprehended a militant in Chadoora, who was previously a “stone-thrower”.
"He had recently joined militancy and was arrested along with one AK-47 and was a close associate of the SPO who went missing on Wednesday,” he said.
The missing SPO has been identified as Altaf Hassan, son of Ghulam Hassan Bhat of Qazipora Chadoora, who was posted at SOG Camp Chadoora and went missing along with two AK-47 rifles and three magazines on Wednesday.
Kumar also appreciated the Police for their “work and dedication”.
He urged them to apprehend all such militant modules in Srinagar that are operating in the city.
“We are expecting a good tourist season in winter and for that, there should be peace in the Valley. We are trying to neutralize all such elements and arrest them,” the IGP said.
Earlier, the mobile internet service was suspended in the area to “prevent law and order situation”.
