IGP orders probe, SP North to conduct investigation
In a major embarrassment for army, MajorLeetulGogoi, whose human shield act triggered outrage in Kashmir last year, was caught with a girl in a local hotel and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir has ordered a probe into the incident.
Sources said Major Gogoi, who is posted with army’s 53 RR at Beerwah in central Kashmir Budgam district, booked a single-room ticket for two guests in Hotel Grand Mamta, Dalgate in Srinagar for a night stay.
The army officer used his residential address; Bordoloi Nagar Tinsukia, Assam in the hotel ticket booked today.
Hotel officials said the army major along with a local girl arrived for check-in at around 10 am and the duo were asked for identity proof by hotel staff before being let inside the room.
“They produced their identity cards that revealed they were from two different places. The male guest later turned out to be an army officer. He was from outside state and the girl hailed from Budgam district. As per our hotel rules, we don’t allow guests, who are not in kinship, inside the hotel. We refused access to them after their identity raised suspicion,” said the hotel manager, Manzoor Ahmad.
The army officer and the girl left the hotel reception in a hurry.
However, outside the hotel premises, there was an altercation between Gogoi, his driver, a local and hotel staff.
As the altercation began, hotel staff called police at around 11 am. A team of policemen immediately rushed to the scene to take stock of the situation.
“It surfaced that a woman and person namely Sameer Ahmed of Budgam had come to see some person. But the hotel receptionist did not allow them to meet the person,” a police spokesman said.
Later, police took all three persons to Police Station Khanyar.
“It was learnt that the woman had come to meet an army officer. The identity and particulars of the army officer have been collected by the police as well,” the spokesman said.
The trio were, however, freed after police recorded their statements.
“All the three were let go as there was no ground for their detention. There is no ground for registering FIR,” said a police officer.
However, Inspector General of Police Kashmir, SwayamPrakashPani has ordered probe into the matter.
“The probe would be conducted by Superintendent of Police North Zone Srinagar,” a police spokesperson said.
A police officer, privy to the matter, said since the probe has been ordered, they will take statements from everyone related to the matter. “We will investigate the matter and action will take place accordingly”.
In April 2017, Major Gogoi had tied a civilian, Farooq Ahmad Dar of Chill Brass Budgam to the bonnet of an army vehicle and used him as a human shield to avoid stone pelting. Gogoi’s human shield act triggered outrage across Kashmir.
