Srinagar, June 12:

The Health and Medical Education (HME) department is drafting a proposal to recruit 600 doctors on contractual basis to manage the dearth of doctors and give further push to health care.
Minister for HME, D K Manyal told Rising Kashmir that finance department had asked them to send a proposal for recruitment of doctors and the process would be completed before June 31.
“We have proposed recruiting of 600 doctors in the state including 500 Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and 100 Bachelor of Unani Medicine Surgery (BUMS) doctors on contractual basis,” he said.
The minister said the health department has recently appointed 371 doctors through Public Service Commission (PSC) but most of them are doing post-graduation in or outside the state.
According to recent Economic Survey, the doctor-patient ratio in the state is 1:1658 against the World Health Organisation’s recommended norm of 1:1000.
The dearth of doctors has badly hit the patient care in the Valley hospitals, especially at peripheries.
The minister admitted that there is also a shortage of nurses and para-medical staff in hospitals saying both were backbone of the healthcare.
“Once this proposal is completed, next step will be recruitment of para-medical and nursing staff,” he said.
According to officials in health department, most of the district and sub-district hospitals and PHCs, CHCs aren’t following the Indian Public Health Standards (IPHS) guidelines putting patients at risk.
IPHS norms suggest that 100 beds should have a total strength of 105 (medical and paramedical manpower), 200 beds should have 166, 300 beds should have 251, 400 beds should have 319, and 500 beds should have 393.
