First convocation belongs to all of us: CUK VC

Central University of Kashmir Vice Chancellor Meraj-ud-Din Mir in brief chat with Rising Kashmir’s Education Reporter RiyazBhat talks about the upcoming first convocation of the university.

  • Tell us about this first convocation?

The convocation is a regular feature of every university and as per norms it needs to be conducted every year but because due to the current circumstances we could not conduct the convocation from last many years. We will be conducting it on July 04. One of the leading scientists of India, Professor Vijay Raghavanhas has consented to deliver the convocation address. Few years before, we had thought of conducting a convocation as well. Even the then president Pranab Mukherjee had given us the date. However, due to some unavoidable circumstances we had to defer it.

  • What are your expectations from the first convocation? How many students are going to attend it?

Well, when you talk about expectations, every student is always a key and desirous to get his/her degree in convocation. There is no question of any expectation from students and faculty but as far as convocation is concerned, it belongs to all of us. One thousand students will get degrees while some will get in-person and some in-absentia. The joyous moment is that around 56 students will get gold medals. There is good number of students who will get their PhD and M.Phil. We also got requests from some parents that they will also like to attend the convocation. However, the difficulty is that we have limited space at SKICC and we are not in position to accommodate each and every participant.

  • How much of time it took you to get prepare and plan for convocation?

For this convocation, we were already ready as we have prepared previously. We had made the necessary arrangements. This time, it did not take much time to get us prepared. The students have been informed and even the students have confirmed us that they are going to attend it.

  • How many subjects are being taught at the main campus Ganderbal?

We have not yet shifted all our departments to Ganderbal. We are still in process of shifting. CUK has its headquarters at Ganderbal but there were some bottlenecks. However, the government have come to our rescue and help by providing us some buildings in Ganderbal. It includes District Institute Of Education Trainings(DIET) building as well. The CMO’s office has also been given to us and we have shifted our offices there. Government has also given us a portion of old college of physical education. Some courses that are in progress at Ganderbal campus include Post-Graduation in Physical Education and some skill development courses as well.

  • How is CUK going to compete with other local and national universities in terms of infrastructure, technology and development?

In terms of academic plans we are marching ahead, we are opening new courses and University Grants Commission (UGC) is also sanctioning us new courses. As on date, we have near about 35 programmes going on, 18 departments are functioning. Of all 14 universities which came into existence along with our university; academically we are at the top. We have the highest number of students of around 2,700 while as other universities have a roll of less than 2,000 students.

  • Are you satisfied with the infrastructure available at both campuses in Srinagar and Ganderbal?

Not at all. I am not satisfied withthe infrastructure.

  • To what extend the academic activities and class work was affected this year due to law and order problems?

I am thankful to my faculty. There were hartals, curfews, crackdowns but our academic schedule was affected. We managed to have extra classes for the students.
