From the lays man's perspective when we think about a civilised society certain values like egalitarian, personal freedom, justice, integrity, compassion and other moral values definitely strike our mind. All the developed as well as developing nations of the world are putting their efforts to inculcate among their people the sense of what is right and what is wrong or simply to develop moral sense among people.
Among the various functions assigned to education one of the important function assigned to education is the inculcation of moral values among those who come across it.All the great educationists of the world have emphasized the importance of moral values and they believe that development of science and technology without the development of moral sense can pose a great threat to society as well as to individuals.
Dr.Radha Krishna has pointed out long before that the strength of nation is not judged by its military or technological strength but by the character and moral sense which it people possess. The educational process should aim at developing moral and character aspect of one's personality not merely just intellectual abilities. According to Teddy Roosevelt, to educate a person in mind and not in morals is to educate a menace to society.
Our educational system right from its inception has assigned the task of developing moral values among people. It was the responsibility of our educational system to develop among the people, the sense of what is right and what is wrong. It was assigned to inculcate among people the moral values like honesty, tolerance, integrity, compassion and much more but unfortunately in the modern times when our educational system was much more developed, but still we wouldn’t be able to find a newspaper which does not contain something about immortal behaviour of people.
Every day when we study newspaper we definitely come across a news on rape cases, murder’s, riots, robbery and other immoral behaviour of people . Isn’t all this indicating the failure of our educational system, if yes, who are responsible for this? The parents at home, the teacher’s at school, and the leaders in society have failed to set the right examples and hence the students and the youngster community has gone astray.
The parents at home tell their children one thing but are themselves inconsistent with the same thing. Teachers likewise teach one thing to their students but act themselves differently. All of us have became hypocritical in nature.
One thing about moral values is that they are more caught then taught, but how can we expect our youngsters to develop moral values when our society itself has presented a bad example. Those who were supposed to create a platform for learning of moral values are themselves in what we call as cognitive dissonance.
Covid-19 has come up as a miracle; when our educational system was completely incompetent to develop among people the sense of what is right and what is wrong,Almighty has come up with his own way of developing values. Covid-19 which has almost shook the whole world community has created a sense of fear, stress and anxiety among the people throughout the whole globe. It has made us to realise that whole of the science and technology can mix up with dust sometimes and there will be no alternative even for Americian's without looking to sky. It has ultimately made us to realise that there is some supreme power who is in the charge of the whole world. It has made us to think that there is someone who can cause great chaos, uncertainty and can block the whole world transactions.
COVID19 a dreadful virus which will be remembered for ever can be seen positively from some aspects. From the last month we are observing that whole of the police and other authorities are busy in to fight against Covid-19, but at the same we are witnessing very low immoral behaviour. We are witnessing no rape cases, no murders, no riots, no chaos, no robbery and no crimes at all. We are observing people becoming compassionate and are developing the tolerance and feelings for other communities as well. The important point here is that all this low immoral behaviour is happening in the times when Police and other restricting authorities are busy to fight Covid-19.
At about the same time we are observing that people at all the levels come forward and helping the needy and the poor, people giving respect and value to their elders which was invisible earlier. People accepting the orders of government and act cooperatively with them, people donating money in millions have realised that their contribution can save the lives of people.
So we can say that COVID19 has come to teach us how should we live our life for others and how we should take care of needy, poor and other human beings.
