6 months on, Kashmir’s clock tower remains clock-less

SMC fails to repair defunct clocks

Historical clock tower of Kashmir ‘Ghanta-Ghar’ has become coop for thousands of pigeons, as the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has failed to repair defunct clocks of the tower from last six months.

The Lal Chowk’s clock tower was built in 1980’s by Bajaj Electricals in the heart of Srinagar city. Over the years, it has become a symbol of Lal Chowk, and a centre for political, business and artistic activities.

Ever since the Central Government downgraded Jammu Kashmir state into two union territories authorities have not paid any heed towards the clock tower. This has left the tower in a dilapilated condition.

A local shopkeeper, Nisar Ahmad, told Rising Kashmir that even though for the last six months the Clock Tower is without the clock, but “even in the past its clocks installed on the Clock Tower didn’t show correct time.

Ghanta Ghar gained political significance when the first prime minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted tri-colour on it in 1948.

When the President of Bhartiya Janta Party’s Monahar Joshi led a march in January 1990 and hoisted the tri-colour at the tower, the tower has always remained news.

Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Commissioner Khurshid Sanai, speaking to Rising Kashmir assured that he will look into the matter and make sure that clock will be installed on the tower.
