At least four persons died and one received serious injuries when a Tata Sumo vehicle fell into a deep gorge in Thatri area of Doda district on Monday.
Police said that the Sumo plunged into a deep gorge on Thatri Jangalwar Cheera road in Doda district, when its driver failed to negotiate a sharp curve.
The vehicle (JK06 -63392 ) was on way to Thatri from Cheera village when it skidded off the road, resulting in spot death of four persons and injury to one.
The deceased have been identified as Altaf Hussain son of Mohd Iqbal Naik of Jainerri , Yasir Ahmed son of Abdul Rashid Butt of Janerri Thatri, Touqeer Hussain son of Rehmatuallh of Zaheri village Thatri and Rashid Hussain son of Munwar Din Lone of Rangola Nowtass Thatri.
Meanwhile, the locals said that roads in most of the hilly areas of in the region have become death traps. “Every year hundreds of lives are lost in road accidents on Chenab valley roads and deadly serpentine narrow roads of hilly districts.”
“It has almost become a ritual with the political leaders in power or in opposition to issue condolences on these tragedies and express sympathies with bereaved family. Nevertheless, fact of the matter is that so far nothing substantial has been done except ordering an inquiry into the accident and promising introduction of road safety schemes,” they said.
They said that whenever people are killed in road accidents, the administration announces traffic regulations “only to be forgotten until next accident”. Though corruption in the traffic department is abetting these accidents, prime cause remains the bad condition and narrow roads,” they alleged.
