Jammu, April 24: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Thursday chaired a high-level meeting of the Jammu and Kashmir Higher Education Council (JKHEC) at Lok Bhavan in Jammu, focusing on major reforms in the Union Territory’s higher education system.
The meeting discussed a wide range of initiatives aimed at transforming education in J&K, including the rollout of the “Design Your Degree” (DYD) programme, integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Information Technology into courses, and the promotion of entrepreneurship and skill development among students.
LG Sinha directed officials and universities to ensure effective implementation of the DYD programme on the ground. He also stressed the need to strengthen collaboration between central and UT institutions to bring long-term improvements in higher education.
“We must set benchmarks aligned with national and international standards so that Jammu and Kashmir’s education system becomes a model of excellence,” the Lieutenant Governor said.
The council also discussed ways to increase the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER), launch joint degree programmes between institutions, and develop a shared digital platform for academic collaboration and exchange of ideas.
Other key topics included new initiatives like “The Riverine College,” an AI-based competition for students, budget utilization for 2025–26, and financial planning for 2026–27.
Prof. Dinesh Singh, Vice Chairman of JKHEC, said the main goal of higher education should be to unlock human potential and prepare students to contribute meaningfully to society.
Vice Chancellors and senior education officials from across J&K and central institutions attended the meeting and shared suggestions for implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in a more effective way.
The meeting was attended by senior officials including Vice Chancellors of major universities, IIT Jammu leadership, and representatives from Delhi University’s Cluster Innovation Centre, among others.
