J&K’s Chandeep shines again bags silver medal in Para World Taekwondo C’ship in Turkey

Srinagar, Dec 13: 23-year-old Chandeep Singh, an International Para Taekwondo Athlete shines again by bagging a silver medal in the 9th Para World Taekwondo Championships held at Istanbul, Turkey from December 9 to 12 2021.
He fought extremely well throughout the championship and lost his final bout against Russian opponent in a very close contest. This is the second time he bagged a silver medal in Turkey in the world championship.
Competitors from around 50 countries have competed in the event for the title.  
Hailing from Guru Tegh Bahadur Nagar, Channi Jammu, Chandeep is currently preparing for UPSC exams. He has pursued B.Tech from Mahant Bachittar Singh College, Jammu, received his intermediate education from Banyan International Higher Secondary School.
In 2011, Chandeep lost both his arms in an unfortunate accident at the age of 11 years at Channirama Jammu where he got electrocuted from a high tension wire.
“As the infection was spreading to the other parts of the body, my both arms were amputated owing to infection caused by high intensity electric shock from a high tension wire,” said Chandeep.
After the accident, he started skating, and then switched over to Taekwondo and now is also taking part in swimming competitions.
Playing without the arms was a challenge, fortunately his family did not lose heart and kept him encouraged and supported besides the motivation from friends.
“It was the encouragement and motivation from my Principal, family and friends which helped me to overcome this challenge,” said Chandeep.
Chandeep is also a national player in skating and world record holder.
He ranks 3rd in world ranking, also a State Awardee for outstanding sports person, has bagged silver in 8th world Para Taekwondo championship held in Turkey (2018) and was the only Indian who bagged silver in world Para Taekwondo championship.
He also has bagged gold in the 4th Asian Para Open Taekwondo Championship World Taekwondo (G4)  held in Ho Chi Minh City ,Vietnam (2018), bagged gold in Kimunyong international Para Taekwondo open (G-1) held in Seoul, Republic of Korea, 2018,have bagged gold in 2nd Kathmandu International Taekwondo championship. 
Besides these achievements he has recorded his name in the golden book of world records and assist book of world records in worlds 100 meters fastest Para Skater. 
“We are very proud of him despite these challenges he proved his mettle at international, national and l arenas,” said Rasleen Kour, sister of Chandeep, and added “Indian famous Athlete Malikha Singh is his inspiration.”
Chandeep is training under Atul Pangotra,Taekwondo Coach, J&K Sports Council.
“Chandee P is the first Para Athlete from J&K who achieved such a great feat in this Olympic sport at World level and was only possible because of the financial support of J&K Sports Council,’’ Coach, Atul Pangotra told Rising Kashmir.
He added that Chandeep is a very talented boy and does training with regular athletes and also won a silver medal in swimming last year.
 Pangotra said he is also thankful to Secretary Sports council J&K, Nuzhat Gull under whose leadership boys and girls of valley are proving their mettle at international, national arenas.
“I also extend my gratitude to Advisor to Lieutenant Governor, Farooq Khan and Principal Secretary, Alok Kumar (IAS) for their support and making his ways possible to reach this platform,” he said.
He said that they are sure that Chandeep can secure his place in the upcoming International Taekwondo Events with the support of JKSC.
