New Delhi, Dec 15: The Union Minister of Jal Shakti, C.R. Patil, Government of India has launched the Jal Shakti Hackathon–2025, describing it as a national movement aimed at harnessing India’s collective innovation capacity to build a secure, inclusive and technology-driven water future for the country.
Water is an indispensable resource for all sectors, and India’s water sector will play a crucial role in achieving the vision of “Viksit Bharat @2047.”
The Government of India stated that water security is not the responsibility of any single department or ministry, but can only be strengthened through coordinated efforts involving public participation, community initiatives, policy, and science.
To realize the “Water Vision @2047,” the Government of India is prioritizing technological innovations and practical solutions from citizens to strengthen the country’s water resources management. In this direction, the Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation under the Ministry of Jal Shakti has launched the “Jal Shakti Hackathon–2025” as a visionary national initiative.
While inaugurating the programme Union Jalshakti Minister C. R. Patil apprised the Jal Shakti Hackathon–2025 not merely as a competition, but as a national movement aimed at mobilizing the country’s collective talent to build a secure, inclusive, and technology-driven water future for India. The hackathon seeks to promote innovation in the water sector and position it as a matter of public interest, ensuring accessibility to water for all stakeholders. The initiative adopts a Whole-of Government and Whole-of-Society approach, encouraging wide participation from citizens, researchers, industries, and innovators. This initiative expands the scope of water-sector research beyond traditional institutions and actively encourages participation from start-ups, MSMEs, industries, scientists, academicians, laboratories, incubators, young innovators, rural and women youth, the private sector, and global institutions. Under this programme, the National Institute of Hydrology (NIH), Roorkee has been designated as the Project Implementation Agency (PIA). Dr. Y. R. S. Rao, Director, NIH appealing youth, start-ups, researchers, engineers, and citizen scientists from every corner of the country to submit their creative, innovation-based proposals in a simple and fast manner at the BHARAT–WIN portal (
https://bharatwin.mowr.gov.in). Interested participants can register on the portal and upload their water-related innovative ideas in a maximum of 500 words. The last date for submission is 14 January 2026. All proposals received within the stipulated timeline will be scrutinized. Shortlisted proposals will be invited for online presentations, and selected hackathon winners will receive an award of ₹ 1 lakh for developing Proof of Concept (PoC) which includes defined problem statement, methodology, deliverables, and potential real-world applications.
