JAMMU, Apr 12: The Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H) in Jammu has begun planning to provide human organs to needy patients outside J&K, and a mock drill to transfer human organs from GMC to Jammu Airport was held today.
“This will be the first time that J&K will provide human organs to the needy in different States of India,” Dr. Shashi Sudan Sharma, Principal, GMC-Jammu, told Rising Kashmir, adding, “The mock drill/trial run was conducted today and we will analyse how long it took to transport the dummy human organs from GMC to the Airport and whether it was within the required time period or not.”
The mock drill for transporting dummy human organs from GMC-Jammu to Jammu Airport was conducted amid tight security along around 7km route all the way from GMC to Jammu Airport.
The Jammu GMC Principal further said that everything will be studied and analysed that whether the dummy organs were transported in the required time as technically/medically specified for shifting to the specified place.
All issues i.e delay of flight, obstructions caused in way of shifting organs, availability of specialised staff on time etc will be discussed and analysed and rectification, if any will be made.
“After analysis, if need arises, some more such mock drills would be conducted so that when we actually begin transporting human organs, everything is ensured technically and medically,” the GMC Principal said.
The mock drill was conducted in cooperation with Police, Traffic Police, Forensic experts, health experts, Airport Authority of India (AAI). “The organs of the brain dead people like heart, liver, lungs, pancreas could be provided to the needy people outside J&K,” the Principal said adding, “We don’t have transplant of these organs in J&K so we are trying to provide these to the needy outside J&K”.
Once we start transplant of these organs in J&K, the Green Corridor will help us to get organs from other States for needy people here in J&K.
