Vox Pop - Seizure of non-JK registered vehicles unjust, people demand time

As the government asked owners of non-J&K registered vehicles to register their vehicles locally, the move has not been seen positively by the people. Rising Kashmir spoke to locals to gauge their opinion on the issue.

Those who have bought the vehicles from outside JK Union Territory at affordable prices are now being asked by the authorities to re-register their vehicles again, which will incur a huge cost on them. As the price of re-registering their vehicles is high, people who have bought their vehicles at lower prices will prefer seizure of their vehicles instead of doing re-registration.

Yesterday, I was stopped at the Kralkhud area in Srinagar and was asked to show registration documents. Despite showing all the documents, they wanted to challan my vehicle. I argued with them. The traffic cops told me that they have to do challan on non-J&K vehicles at any cost. They only let me go after someone who knew me at the spot intervened. This is not done.

I didn’t see anything new in it as this is a procedure that if anyone is buying a car from outside he/she has to re-register it in the local ARTO office. It is the government that is creating confusion among the people as they have started seizure of the vehicles without setting the deadline. They should give time to those who have bought the vehicles from outside Jammu and Kashmir. Seizing vehicles is not the way. It only creates confusion. The vehicle owners should be given time as re-registering vehicles is a time-consuming process.

Naseer Ahmad, Nishat

We haven’t stolen these vehicles from outside. We bought them legally and the concerned agencies are treating us like we have stolen them. The concerned department asked the owners to re-registered their vehicles with their respective ARTO offices within 15 days but after the announcement of the order, they started seizure of vehicles, which is unfair and not just. They must set a deadline first and wait for it to be over and allow people to re-register their vehicles.
