Family members of Kulgam rape victim stage protest

Srinagar, Dec 23: The family members of the girl from south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, who was kidnapped and allegedly raped in the last week of October, held a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office in Kulgam today demanding the harshest punishment to the culprits of the ghastly crime.

Carrying placards which read "We want Justice", and "Justice delayed is Justice denied", the protesting family demanded that the investigation of the case should be undertaken on a fast track mode. The protesting family, accompanied by their lawyer Tanveer Ahmad while speaking to the media said, "The punishment for the culprits should be a lesson so that no one in future dares to think of such an act." The protesting family presented a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner Kulgam, wherein they demanded that the investigation be completed as soon as possible. 

The incident had sparked protests and uproar in the district, with demanding stringent punishment for those who were responsible for the alleged kidnapping and sexual assault of the girl.

The incident had occurred in Akhal village of the Kulgam district. The victim had gone to the Akhal hamlet to attend a wedding ceremony from where two youth belonging to the Ashmuji village kidnapped and raped her in a dense orchard. The girl was found in a semi-unconscious state and was first shifted to the local hospital and then to Srinagar for specialized treatment, where she succumbed later.

The police had identified the accused as Adil Dar and Wasim Dar.

Taking cognizance of the incident, a team headed by SHO Devsar under the supervision of DSP Headquarters Kulgam was constituted to nab the accused. Utilizing all available means, with strenuous efforts specific information was generated by the investigating team which led to arrest of the accused within three hours after complaint was received

Regarding the incident, a case vide FIR number 116/2020 U/S 341, 366, 376/511, 354, 323 stands registered in the Police Station Devsar. (KNT)
