I used to see Abdul Hameed Tunch and Mumtaz Awan quite often as they would come with Shujaat sahib. They were both good natured. I will never forget that evening. The eid was approaching and Hameed had bought a small toy for his daughter. He gave it to me and asked to give it back when they would leave. He then performed ablutions and offered prayers. Mumtaz was waiting downstairs and Shujaat sahib was in his room. Couple of hours later they were all killed. It was so shocking. We didn’t know what was happening. I had prepared Iftar and was serving it when I heard the gunshots.

Mumtaz, survived by wife and three children, daughter Mehvish Mumtaz, Shahnawaz Awan and Muneeb Awan was from Tangdar. Hameed was from Bihadi village, just across the Neelum river.

In the office they would often tell me that Shujaat sahib was very kind and treated them well. They didn’t want to be assigned to anyone else, they would say it to me.

In as much as I know of Hameed and Mumtaz, they were very loyal and very dutiful. They used to be alert all the times. Although they talked very little, but both of them were humble. They were part of the family. Whenever we talk about Shujaat sahib, memories of Mumtaz and Awan also come to mind. The bond between them and many other staffers was very strong. They will always be remembered. We miss them.
