Govt to attach properties of drug peddlers in Kupwara: DC

Srinagar, Jan 07: In a stringent move against the drug menace, Deputy Commissioner Kupwara said on Saturday that the property of those involved in the heinous crime of drug peddling would be identified and sealed.
Dr Doifode Sagar Dattatray also convened a meeting of the District Level Committee of the NARCO Coordination Centre (NCORD) to review the measures for controlling drug abuse in the district.
All the officers were urged by DC to intensify their efforts to put an end to the drug issue during the meeting.
He said that it was crucial to include all stakeholders to inform them of the detrimental and disastrous effects that drugs have on society and young people.
He also went over the district's drug addiction prevention strategies. The police department has implemented strong measures to address the drug problem in the district, according to SSP Kupwara.
Kupwara Police had registered 89 cases under the NDPS Act during the previous year of 2022, which involved the arrest of 161 accused persons, 30 PSA detentions, the seizure of 27.11 kg of charas, 8.24 kg of brown sugar, 20.20 kg of heroin, 450 bottles of codeine, and the recovery of a fine of Rs 11,8250 during the previous year.
ASP Handwara informed that 52 FIRs have been registered under the NDPS Act last year, which involved the arrest of 74 accused persons, 6 PSA detentions, and the seizure of 13 vehicles, 8.88 kg of charas, 2 kg of brown sugar, 47 grammes of heroin, 540-gram grammes of cannabis, and a fine of Rs.108040 was also recovered in the Police District Handwara.
The DC, while reviewing the status of rehabilitation centres, was informed by the CMO that two rehabilitation centres are functional in the district, one each at SDH Kupwara and DH Handwara.
He directed the concerned parties to submit an action plan for further strengthening the rehabilitation centers in the district. He also directed t frequent interactions with drug-affected individuals in order to facilitate their recovery.
The DC directed the concerned parties to submit a request for the men and machinery needed to ensure the rehabilitation centre's smooth operation.
