Srinagar, April 06: In view of surge in COVID-19 cases, the government Tuesday ordered temporary suspension of all official indoor sports activities in Jammu and Kashmir with immediate effect.

An order issued by the Principal Secretary to the government, Alok Kumar stated that it was likely that the young sportspersons to get infected as chances of transmission of the virus while playing close contact sports has also increased due to a recent spike in the number of COVID cases.

“It is hereby ordered that all close contact sports like boxing, wrestling, Judo, Karate, Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, Thangta, Taekwondo, Wushu, and any other sports of a similar character shall remain temporarily suspended till further orders” read the order.

According to the order all the other outdoor sports activities shall be conducted with proper SOPs as already detailed in the circular instructions issued by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India.

Judo coach Shafkat Shafi said that they welcome the government’s decision to temporarily suspend indoor sports activities.

He said the measure may bring inconvenience to the players, but the safety of their life and health is their priority.

“We will conduct online classes for the players. Players can practice at home while following proper guidelines and SOPs and attending online classes," Shafi said.
