Govt College Shopian renamed after slain para-trooper

Srinagar, Sep 16: Authorities on Thursday renamed Government Degree College (GDC) Shopian after a local slain para-trooper who lost his life while discharging his duty a few years ago.
Principal of the college, Prof Bashir Ahmad Dar said that the Government of India (GoI) has ordered them to rename the college after the slain para-trooper Imtiyaz Ahmad Thokar.
He said, “The new name of the college was set by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) after the martyred Para-trooper trooper Imtiyaz Ahmad Thokar.”
The principal also said that Thokar was a resident of Shopian district, “He was martyred some years back. Thokar was also awarded with the gallantry award for his bravery.”
In the meantime, the college had organized a renaming ceremony of the college on Thursday.
On the occasion, the officials of the college said that the ceremony was attended by the parents and other relatives of Thokar.
Earlier in August, the authorities had asked all the deputy commissioners of the region to identify government schools that can be named after the martyrs
In this regard, the Committee was also constituted to recommend and identify the institutions and other infrastructures that are to be renamed after the names of slain soldiers, policemen and other prominent personalities.
