Srinagar, May 20: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed optimism about the upcoming G-20 summit in Srinagar, saying it will give a worldwide platform to promote the region’s long-standing hospitality legacy. He emphasised that the event will have a substantial influence on the tourism sector as well as the union territory’s overall economy.
Interacting with the media persons, the Lieutenant Governor lauded the efforts of Srinagar Smart City Limited for developing the 6 km-long stretch of the Rajbagh Riverfront into a world class public space with facilities like walkways, cycling, green space, free wifi, universal access and numerous activities along the way.
“In the near future, a library and cafe will also be developed. The work on other side of the river will start soon,” he said while inaugurating the Riverfront on River Jehlum at Rajbagh.
LG Manoj Sinha emphasised Srinagar’s extraordinary development measures, which aim to make the city into an international-level attraction that improves the urban experience.
“The Rajbagh Riverfront stretch in Srinagar Smart City has been turned into a world-class public area, strengthening the river-people connection. It is also a significant signal of J&K’s quick expansion,” Sinha added
“Srinagar city evolved and flourished around the water bodies, which contributed to the prosperity of society, local economy and the culture. However, due to neglect and degradation over the period of time, the restoration of this priceless heritage was need of the hour and I am sure it will contribute to living standards of people and boost the local economy”, he further added.
Sinha outlined various forthcoming enhancements, including the establishment of free Wi-Fi zones, cycle tracks, walkways, and cafes, along with plans to open a library catering to the intellectual needs of residents and visitors. The vision is to position Srinagar as a ‘smart city’ that seamlessly blends modernity with its unique water-bound landscape.
Highlighting the significance of the G-20 event, the Lieutenant Governor expressed satisfaction over the comprehensive preparations made by the people and the Jammu and Kashmir administration. Sinha acknowledged that the event would showcase the age-old hospitality of Kashmir on an international platform, ultimately resulting in increased tourist arrivals.
“The successful G-20 event was expected to give a substantial boost to Jammu and Kashmir’s economy. Grateful for the selection of Jammu and Kashmir as the host for this prestigious event, Sinha extended his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi” he maintained.
Replying to a question on the G20 arrangements, the Lt Governor said the J&K Government with the active support and participation of the people, is all geared up for the G20 meeting.
The Jhelum Riverfront has been envisaged as a continuous walking and cycling promenade along with parks, and public plazas equipped with public amenities like sanitation, seating spaces, and high-quality lighting. Besides, Srinagar Smart City Limited has also taken up the project of water-transport and Jhelum cruise for the purpose of both public transport and leisure, it was informed.
