Srinagar, May 20: In view of ongoing celebrations and events related to India’s G-20 presidency, Department of Economics, Amar Singh College, organized a seminar on Saturday on the theme “India: The next Manufacturing Hub” which highlighted the immense potential of the country to emerge as a manufacturing hub in line with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The seminar, held in the Taseer Hall, was attended by students and faculty members of the college. It began with a presentation by Prof Tasveer Ahmad, Head, Department of Economics, in which he gave a comparative analysis of different economic indicators between China and India.
He argued that the two countries were similar in terms of various economic parameters at the time of India’s Independence with India slightly ahead of China in per capita income, and outlined how India has the right potential to ride on its demographic dividend by investing in quality education and infrastructure development.
Dr Parvaiz Ahmad Kira, Faculty member at the Department of Economics, in his presentation, spoke about the various policy interventions like “Make in India”, “Startup India” and “Production linked Incentive scheme” undertaken by the Government of India to usher in growth and development in the country.
The seminar also saw presentations by two students of the Economics Department, Meer Shahzaib and Irfan Baroo, who put forward their views on how certain innovative policy interventions can help the country in achieving long-term growth. After the seminar, an engaging Question and Answer session was held during which Dr Basharat Shameem, Assistant Professor in English and Dr Zubair Nazir, Assistant Professor in Public Administration, put forth their respective thoughts on the theme and engaged with the audience.
In the end, Prof Mujeeb Kawoosa, Coordinator of G-20 activities at the college, who also presided over the function, appreciated the efforts of the Department of Economics to organising the event to enlighten the students about the immense potential of the country.
The seminar ended with a formal vote of thanks presented by Dr Maliha Batool while the stage proceedings were conducted by Dr Binish Qadri.
